Seafood restaurants take it on the chin
MUMBAI: For the second consecutive year, seafood restaurants are witnessing a double dip in fortunes in August. Once again, an oil spill off the city has occurred during Shravan, causing panic among Fish-eaters . The restaurants, which have witnessed a 40% drop in customers owing to the festive month, as also Ramzan, now have to contend with a 60% drop in fish-eaters , who are staying away for fears of contamination.About a fear psychosis besetting customers , Santosh Singh of Gajalee said, “It would have been (anyway bad) for business had the spill occurred at any other time. (Add to that) several consumers avoiding fish during the monsoon .”The term Fast Food was recognized in a dictionary by Merriam–Webster in 1951.Outlets may be stands or kiosks, which may provide no shelter or seating, or fast food restaurants . Franchise operations which are part of restaurant chains have standardized foodstuffs shipped to each restaurant from central locations.
Among those who dare, a corporate party from Mahindra & Mahindra dined at Trishna near Fort on Wednesday evening. The restaurant’s manager Praful Takle said: “We are confident of our regular suppliers, who are presently procuring their ware from other ports. But once fishing resumes off Mumbai next week, we will check every consignment to detect signs of contamination. Spoilt stock will be discarded.”The monsoon ban on fishing in the state from June to August forces eateries to procure raw stock from Vishakhapatnam , Chennai and Gujarat. “Still, people are taking no chances and are rejecting fish in restaurants,” said Sukesh Shetty, secretary of Ahar, an association of over 7,000 restaurants and hotels in Mumbai. “Following the oil spill, 60% of fish lovers have given up the food. Despite telling them that the seafood stock is from outside the city, they are not willing to take chances.” To explore moreIndian Restaurants click here .Ahar’s joint secretary Shashikant Shetty said: “It’s not panic. People are aware of the consequences of contamination . Several diners are opting for chicken instead. The restaurant owners know that; so, they are prepared to cope with less demand. But I must add that most of the fish in Restaurants in Mumbai comes from beyond city limits. Since fishing is done in deep sea and not along the coast, there is no chance of seafood getting contaminated by oil.”
