What kind of fish should i get for a 55 gallon aquarium?
I am a beginner in keeping a fish tank and a friend has given us a 55 gallon aquarium. I understand how to set up and maintain the tank, but I’m not sure what fish I should get. I really like the groups colorful fish, but don’t know how hard they are to maintain or what kind of fish they are. Koi fish seem interesting, yet I’m not sure how many I could have or if they are right for beginners.
Koi need 300+ gallons. Really, they don’t belong in any aquarium. They’re pond fish.
I agree that if you’re interested in Goldfish, 3-4 Fancy Goldfish would be your best bet. (Avoid any Common/Comet/Feeder Goldfish, as these will grow too large for your aquarium.
Goldfish in general are messy fish. You should, if keeping them, equip your aquarium with filtration rated for at least double the aquarium’s volume, or with a Gallon Per Hour turnover rating of about 10x the volume. So for your 55 gallon, you’d want filtration rated for at least 110 gallons, or with a GPH of 500 gallons.
Research your Goldfish (or any fish you’re interested in) very well before purchasing them, as all have different requirements and compatibility issues.
Also, be absolutely certain that you have a full understanding of the nitrogen cycle before you bring any fish home.
Under stocked aquariums will leave you with more room for error, and generally less stressed and healthier fish. IMO, 3 Fancy Goldfish, which will end up somewhere between 6 and 8 chunky inches long, would perfectly stock a 55 gallon.
