Surfcasters are hardy group of anglers that are passionate about catching surf Fish. Saltwater surf fishing is well established world wide and especially along the Eastern coast of the United States at location such as the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Surf fishing is not difficult to learn it can be done with minimal amount of gear and a few simple saltwater surf Fishing Rigs.
Visit the fishing shops in your area and try out a few rods to pick the one that you are most comfortable with. You should look for a rod with a medium flex tip and 8 to 9 feet long. This combination should have enough power to cast far from shore and handle most species of fish commonly found near the surf.
Surf fish like to be around rip currents and troughs to search for food. Troughs can be spotted during low tide by searching for deep bodies of water along shore. Other good potential spots to fish are points and bays, river mouths also provide good feed area for fish.
Saltwater surf fishing is most effective when using live bait. Shrimp, sea mullet, sand crabs, squid and blood worms are popular bait. Shrimp and sea mullet are good all-round bait for most species of surf fish. Blood worms are attractive to blue fish and striped bass and sand crabs are good for red drum, pompano and red fish. You can also visit the local fishing shop and ask for the bait to use, the shops usually sell certain types of bait that will work well for the particular day.
Waders are important accessories to have when you’re out surf fishing. Waders come in various models and makes, chest high waders are popular with surcasters, waders allow you to go farther from shore to enhance your long distance casting. You can buy PVC tubing and cut into 12 to 14 inches sections to use as rod holders. Rod holders will keep your gear from getting wrecked by the sand. Wash all of your gear at the end of your fishing outing to keep the salt from rusting out your Fishing Rods And Reels.
