First off we need to talk about the night Fishing Equipment that every night fisherman should have on there boat before venturing out in the twilight. Then we will discuss some of the best baits I use For Fishing at night. #1 Underwater fishing lights
I always put this item at the top of my night fishing equipment list and for good reason. The best florescent submersible’s use 25-40watts of power , and they emit 1000 to 3000 lumens per tube. I use underwater fishing lights no matter what species of fish I am night fishing for because to cut to the chase that flat ass attract zoo plankton and bait fish. Bait fish are the main ingredient that is needed to have a successful bass fishing at night trip. These lights absolutely are useful in attracting game fish such as bass to your night fishing location. When you have a swarm or ball of bait fish surrounding your underwater fishing light anything can happen.
I need to re-address that you do not want to go out and pick up the first underwater fishing light that you find. It is amazing how much plankton these lights will attract. These little organisms are the primary food source of most of the small bait fish that game such as bass love to attack. If you want to attract game fish like the largemouth bass to your fishing area you need to be able to attract bait fish to your fishing location. It is important that you understand that underwater lighting is important to attract large concentrations of plankton to your immediate fishing area. The plankton will lure in bait fish in numbers which will in turn attract some largemouth bass into your fishing area. When you see that bait ball swirling around your underwater fishing light you start to get excited! Just throw your line close to your light and just wait for that first largemouth bass to hit your bait! When there is bait fish in your area in numbers you better be ready for and exciting bass fishing at night evening because anything can happen when you get bait fish swarming near your Fishing Rigs.
#2 Surface night fishing lights.
Surface lighting is very important not only for fishing but for your safety. I want to identify two primary areas that surface lighting will help you. As I stated above you need to be safe out on the water. Surface lighting will identify you to other night fisherman and recreational boaters. There are not many out at night but enough to cause watercraft accidents. Manny of these accidents occur because of improper surface lighting. At a very minimum you need to at least have your night running lights on when you are night fishing.
The second reason is to attract insects. Baitfish and game fish will feed off of them when your bass fishing at night. Just make sure you shield your surface light such as a Coleman lantern, so the side facing the boat is shielded to reflect back to the surface of the water. You want the bugs out on the water not all over you!
#3 Pre-Planning is important!
Before you decide to go night fishing it is very important to do some preplanning. Make a check list of all the items that will be essential after nightfall. Also get out and scout the areas you want to night fish for the evening. If you have a GPS to mark them that would be great. If you do not have a GPS identify land marks that you will be able to identify after night fall. Do not overlook finding out where the bass are feeding at on any body of water you plan to fish when you decide to go bass fishing at night, this is very important if you want to catch any fish. Just a note, do not pack up and leave your first night fishing location because you do not get any hits in the first hour. The bass’s eyes take about an hour to adjust to the dark and during that time the fish will sit tight until their eyes adjust to the dark.
Live Baits to use For Bass Fishing At Night
I am very surprised that more fisherman do not use live baits to catch bass. if you are just starting out in bass fishing and you do not have a lot of money then fishing for bass with live baits may be the way to go for you. You do not need and expensive bass Fishing Rod and reels and tackle a solid medium rod and middle of the pack reel will do just fine.
